故事发生在清朝年间。王宁氏（金莉莉 饰）二十年前带着吃奶的女儿从宫中逃了出来，如今女儿柳如是（马千珊 饰）已出落成一名绝色才女，她与文坛领袖钱谦益（李鸣 饰）一见倾心，最终喜结连理。然而朝廷的一场大变革动摇了二人爱情的根基，摄政王多尔衮（陈道明 饰）兵临南京城下，南明王朝作鸟兽散，不忍黎民遭涂炭的钱谦益将金陵城拱手相让。得胜进城的多尔衮意气风发，他软禁了柳如是，劝她归顺自己，但柳如是过人的胆识和智慧令多尔衮刮目相看，使他明白了一个浅显的道理，即人心不可用武力所能征服......。A dentist teams up with a feisty would-be assassin to put the final touches on the plan to kill his wife.
