以文艺片见长的罗伯特．本顿意外地执导了这部黑社会动作片，台前幕后的阵容惊人。摄影执导是大师级的拉斯托．阿曼多斯，主演明星包括达斯廷．霍夫曼、 布鲁斯．威利斯、 尼科尔．基德曼等大牌，叫人充满期待，然而影片的实际却有点雷大雨小之感。剧情描述在30年代美国经济大萧条的时候，比利．巴盖一直想在逆境中出人头地，凭机智的脑袋成为黑道枭雄舒滋的左右手，但是江湖的险恶却也让比利经常陷入生死边缘的危机，为了活命还不得不绞尽脑汁。全片的气氛比较文艺腔，也偏向小人物奋斗史，而非帮派血战的格局。。Try as he might, the roguishly handsome Cliff Starkey, just can't keep out of trouble. In his sleepy home town on the English coast, nothing much inspires him...apart from bowls. Cliff has always preferred to play by his own rules much to the disapproval of the regimented, elderly bowls fraternity. Before long, the bay boy of bowls is turning the sedate and very English pastime...。
